little hat

Yesterday I decided to completely ignore my To Do list and instead knit a tiny hat.

Same yarns as the baby cardigan.  I used absolutely the last inch of the pink yarn and almost all the green.  It would have been cuter in all stripes to really match the cardigan, but there just wasn't enough pink.  I'll be putting more details about this in my Ravelry notebook, if you're curious.

Thanks for the nice comments about the little sweater, by the way!

Nothing near as exciting as being as costume con, sigh.

I've finished the baby sweater back and half the front.  I started the other front this morning.

Made HB a pair of new jeans with the revised pattern.  I used a great new fly method which I will probably rant about further in future.

Yesterday I cut mock-ups for the man's 18th c. suit.  We bought fabrics last week: 50% off linens from Jo-Ann.  A tan one with a brown pinstripe for the coat and breeches, and a plain chocolate brown for the vest.  I'm going for the plain but well-tailored look (if I can pull it off).  More American Revolution (civillian) than French Revolution (aristocracy).

I got our hats in the mail from Jas. Townsend.  The wool felt blank that I'm planning to tricorn-ify fits his head okay, but it's not very fancy.  Which is to say, it looks like a $20 hat.  Which it is.  The straw hat I got Is much wider than I wanted, but I knew that in advance.  Probably I will enjoy the extra width once I'm out in the sun.  The straw is nice quality, excpet where it looks like there is a slight jog in colors where a new braid was joined in.

Yesterday I also went out to Treadle and got some white cotton lawn for my chemise dress.  I'm following the diagram in The Cut Of Women's Clothes, except that since this is a pregnancy costume, I won't be pulling it in at the waist, just under the bust.  I have a crap ton of nice green satin ribbon which I will probably use both to trim the hat and to make a 'waist' sash.  Anyway, I'm probably not going to make this until a couple weeks before the event, so I can make sure it fits properly.

Until then, I'll be focusing on the man's suit and some modern everyday things.

I finished the embroidery yesterday and blocked it. It should be dry by now, so this afternoon I'll finish the edges and frame it. Yay!

Bad news: Two J. P. Ryan patterns I need want for the man + shipping = $50. Crap! I think I'll go back to the patterns I tried to draft/enlarge from last year and see if I can make them work.

Good news: Jas.Townsend has wool felt tricorns for $25, and tricorn-able wool felt blanks for $20. They also have a suitable ladies' wide, flat straw hat, so hopefully I can save on shipping from them.

Things!!!

I finished the koi quilt last week. Here it is!

I finished my little knitted hat a couple days ago. It still needs a button and I need to weave in the yarn ends, but the knitting part is done!

I look way dorkier than the woman in the pattern, but of course, that's to be expected.

I finally started doing the quilting on the koi quilt yesterday.  I went against everyone's good advice and used the border I had originally planned.  This was for a couple reasons: 1.) I'm poor and lazy and didn't want to get any more new fabric for this project, 2.) my husband said he liked the border, and 3.) I decided I liked it that way, too! Sorry, all.

I'm using the free-motion quilting foot with the feed teeth dropped.  I quilted the water with wavy lines and made concentric echo lines on the rocks, and followed the wavy lines for the weeds.  I decided to leave the fish plain, with just a line of quilting around the edge.  I thought about doing scales, but I think they are too small to do a whole lot of detail, and a little bit of detail would make them look more cartoonish.  I wanted them to look a bit more abstract.  I'm going to quilt the border with wide, random stippling.  I think I only have about 3 hours of work left on it, so I hope I finish it today!

I've been so eager to work on my knitting the past few weeks.  Right now I'm a few rows past the halfway point of my hat.  The weather is turning wonderfully lovely and cold here and it will be so nice to have something to wear on my cold ears when winter comes.

I took this a couple weeks ago, I've done about twice this amount now.  I don't have time right now to take a current photo, but I wanted to show my pretty yarns and how the blue looks knitted up:
