Finally finished these and I really couldn’t be happier with them. I took these photos out on the porch but they are now hanging in F’s room and really brighten it up. Aside from one frame of family photos, this is the only real decoration in there.

After I thought I was done, I went back (a couple times!) and added more detail stitching. I’m glad I did; most of my initial stitching was outlining the appliqués and while it sharpens the edges, it doesn’t add much to the whole.

Adding stitching to the urn was the last thing I did. It was fun; I was able to just go crazy with stitches and colors, but the stripes on the fabric kept me in check.

I mounted them on cardboard with zig-zag stitching. It’s good to do this firmly but not too tightly because it’s nice to be able to wiggle it around a little as you sew in order to keep the image centered and the grain straight. I used a seam gauge and checked as I went, giving a tug here and there as needed.

The frames were a Goodwill find. I like the idea of making pieces in sets, so when I find two or more frames that match I like to snap them up. I also like finding plain wood ones that can be painted. These were a pretty crappy set; totally unfinished, rough wood, and no hangers. I painted them brown with crappy “Folk Art” brand paint from the craft store, but it went on so matte it looked like chalk, so I glazed them with a thin layer of clear acrylic medium (I am so not a painter – someone at Wet Paint directed me to this). The subtle shine really improved them. Then I added some nail-in picture hangers from the hardware store. They are 11” x 14”.

Yay, done!
