I finished this doll!

The pattern is Patchwork Penny from Wee Wonderfuls. She’s designed to have a matching quilt, but I just made the doll. Other than that, I pretty much followed the pattern without changes.

Body is organic cotton muslin.  Dress is various cottons.  Boots are cotton velvet.  Face is embroidered in DMC floss, and I had to do it over and over to get it right. At first, she looked too worried, but when I changed the mouth and eyebrows, she looked mean! I rounded the eyebrows a bit more and now she looks happy. It’s amazing how such tiny changes can affect the whole expression.

Is it wrong that I had so much fun doing her photo shoot?

The hair is Cascade Ultra Pima cotton yarn. Pattern called for Lamb’s Pride wool, but I wanted her to be machine washable. The hair is kind of heavy and does weigh her down a bit, but oh well.

Sewing the hair on was the scariest part. First the hair is sewn on the part by machine, then hand sewn to the head along the part, then braided, then the directions get vague about tacking it down all over the head. I figured the best way to do this invisibly is to skim through the under half of several strands of yarn at once, then a teeny dip into the head fabric; repeat.

Since I made this doll for F and she is already getting carried around by her hair, it might come loose and/or rip off at some point, but I will deal with that then. I do like the look of the yarn hair, but next time I want to do fabric hair.

And next time had better come soon, because this was so much fun, I can hardly wait to make another one. I know that soon F will have far too many dolls.
