Picnic!
The DFWCG picnic was awesome! So worth the minor trouble of lugging all the costumes all that way. We had a lovely afternoon. I was so glad to be able to meet so many amazing people, especially those I’ve been LJ-friends with for years:
jenthompson and
christylee. I also got to meet
nuranar and I know a few more people I met there are on LJ, but I didn't catch anybody else's username.

photo from Jenthompson.
My photos for the event are here. I’ve got more, but I got sick of uploading. My hubby took most of these.
LJ is being stupid and not doing cuts today so I'm going to try to shove everything else under
What do you call this spinny string thing?

The kite is airborne!

Shoes!

I need to thank
undycat here for giving me these awesome shoes!
F napped for about an hour beforehand, then I got her in the car without waking her and she slept another hour on the way there. I got her dressed when we got there and she was fine.
F looked so freaking cute in her dress!!! I liked her pink Victorian okay, but this was so much better. She was just the little lady. She was so sweet that I didn’t even notice the little flaws in my sewing.
I sewed the underskirt to an old white T-shirt; I scooped the neck and shortened the sleeves of the shirt. Her open gown closed with hook&eye tape. A pinked ruffle, gathered in the center, ran around the neckline. Both dress fabrics are cotton sateen. A small kerchief was tucked into the bodice and she had white tights and black Mary Janes. The kerchief came untucked constantly, but otherwise the outfit held up well and she seemed comfy.
F was so good all day and only had one minor meltdown when she wanted to play with Jen’s kite and I pulled her away. It’s so hard being two!
My jacket is the 1770s-80s caraco from Patterns of Fashion. Amazingly, the diagram was pretty much my size, so I didn’t need to do much adjusting after enlarging it. It’s just the two layers of linen, the printed outer and the plain inner, and no boning or stiffening. The main seams are machine-sewn and I hand sewed all the edges. The trim is cotton twill tape that I pleated and stitched down by hand. The sleeve ruffles/cuffs are hand-hemmed, finished with a band, and basted into the sleeves. It closes in front with pins.
I couldn’t pack my straw hat and I didn’t have a cap and couldn’t figure out anything to do with my hair, so it was in my usual bun.
This was such a fun costume to make and I really enjoyed wearing it. I like the way it looks, but I really need to work on my 18th century poise; in so many of the photos, I’ve got my hands on my hips, or I’m slouching (yes, even in my stays, sigh).

Her typical "running through the wilderness" pose:

Some sweet kid-moments of the day:
F walking in and charming everyone immediately with her cuteness (I think I’m entitled to some motherly pride here, no?)
Jen’s son running up to a couple of us and asking “Where’s my mom?” “She’s over there with her kite,” we gestured. He looked at her, then looked back at us and said decisively, “My mom’s awesome.”
F eating a giant apple about as big as her head. (It's half gone here.)

My HB wore his linen suit from a couple years ago. It has issues. The main one is he’s lost weight since I made it, and his pants weren’t really staying up as securely as they should have. No wardrobe malfunctions, thank goodness! But he was a little uncomfortable.
He really, really needs a new suit. I owe him big time, for wearing the sub-par suit and for supporting me so well with childcare duty at the picnic.
I'm so eager to see everyone else's photos!

The fit on your caraco was just amazing. I need to make one of those things someday. You definitely inspired me.
The spinning toy is a diabolo. Did you ever try it? I was so much fun!
Once again, I'm SO happy that you guys were able to come! I look forward to hanging out with you again in the future sometime! :)

We will probably be at another event during our next visit, in a year or two.
