ball dresses
Mar. 9th, 2012 12:31 pmI am trying to plan in advance for the super-schmancy new ball gown I want for next year's Victorian 12th Night. I am saving up now so I can blow a ridiculous amount on silk and trimmings.
But I've been looking through books at fashion plates, and I'm left feeling totally uninspired. It's true, daywear has always excited me more, but this was unexpected. I am yearning for crisp pleats, sensible walking skirts, and long sleeves with stylish cuffs. The soft, pastel, off-the-shoulder, puffy sleeve look is feeling a bit soppy to me now.
I wonder if I would have been considered old enough by 1870s standards to attend a ball in long sleeves? Of course I've done it before, but only when I didn't have anything else. I'm making something new and I want to try to make it accurate. But if there's a sleeve option other than "adorable little puff," I am there.
