petticoat

Finished the new silk taffeta petticoat yesterday.  It's for the not-quite-Natural Form look, small bustle, full behind the knees.  To that end, I've cut in narrow in front and sides, and very full in back, with rows of ruffles all down the back panel.  I'm wearing it here over my lobster bustle (with the upper ties loosened) and one really old gored petticoat.

It closes with a button placket at the left side and also has a drawstring at the back yoke to adjust the size.  It's entirely clean-finished; all the main pieces are sewn with french seams, the yoke is lined, and the ruffles are hemmed.  This was necessary because the silk taffeta frayed liked crazy.

It came out a little shorter than I expected.  I had planned to add a final ruffle all the way around the hem, but I decided I like the shape fine this way, and I didn't want to add too much fullness in front.  I briefly debated making a trained petticoat, but I didn't think it was worth the bother.  If I decide to make a small train on the dress, I will just make a balayeuse to fill it out underneath.

I know the silhouette in my fashion plate isn't quite this full, but the ruffles will calm down with a skirt over them, and I just like the shape better this way!

That looks so pretty! You are making me jealous - my Victorian undies are so sad and half-assed. Now I want a pretty petticoat too! ;)

Thanks! I have a lot of crummy, rough, unbleached muslin undies with raw seam allowances and so on. It's so nice to have a nice, tidy, pretty petticoat!

I love how it turned out! Also, I'm envious of your taffeta petticoat.

Thanks! Taffeta is awesome.
