skirts

I spent a few hours yesterday working on new skirts.  I thought I would just be able to jump in and start, but I realized I had to draft patterns first.

When I first started sewing skirts, I would usually just pin or chalk-mark the 'pattern' (which I spontaneously made up each time) onto the fabric, then cut it, and use the cut piece as a template if any multiples needed to be cut.

After a while I realized that was a stupid method and I promised myself I would make paper patterns for even the simplest garment.  That way I don't have to start from scratch each time, even if it is more work in the beginning.  But yesterday I didn't have any patterns that were quite right.

So I made patterns for 2 new skirts, another 5-gored (calf-length this time) and a 12-gored with alternating panels.  I used those and an older pattern to cut out 3 new skirts, 2 in wool and 1 in raw silk.

I also have some blue plaid wool that I'm planning on doing a bias skirt out of, but I'm kind of torn on the design/layout.  More on that later.

I hope to get the 3 skirts mostly if not completely sewn today.

wow. I've got about 14 different projects I would be working on now, but sitting upright isn't exactly my friend.
