This apron took longer to make than any apron has a right to.

But it's done, and I like it.

The bib/bodice of the apron has darts to make it fit more closely and look more curvy.  I used my shirtdress pattern to make the bib pattern.  One dart on each side from waist to bust point.

The straps cross over in back to prevent them slipping off the shoulders.  It took me a while to figure out how to do this and still be able to close the apron and not have to have it go over my head.  I was too stuck on the idea of ties at first.  When I decided to use snaps, the solution became obvious.

I overlocked all the pieces on the serger before sewing.  I thought that if I did that first, I wouldn't need to switch back and forth between the machine and the serger, and that would save me a lot of trouble since I only have one sewing table and to switch between machines I need to pick one up, put it on the floor, then pick the other one up off the floor and put it on the table.  That is heavy and no fun.  But it's what I ended up doing since I kept on needing to overlock more pieces.  I must have switched between machines 15 times.  I can't even remember now all the reasons why.

The pocket is caught in the skirt seams.  I sewed the bib/bodice to the skirt, then attached the finished waistband to the outside.

The straps are piped with green cotton.  This was leftover from a skirt and I used up every scrap of it.  I sewed them WS together and then turned them, which was hard, but grading my seam allowances and using a pair of small needle-nose pliers helped.

The back/shoulder straps are sewn on to the waistband at an angle.  At the top of the apron, they are held on with buttons (no buttonholes) in colors that pick up some of the print's colors, sewn on as randomly as I could.  (Random is very difficult!)  There are two large snaps on each side/back on the waistband.  Each snap has a colorful button on the other ('public') side.  This makes it easier to press the snaps closed, prevents a faded snap outline from developing, and looks super cute.

I made paper pattern pieces for the bib, skirt, and pocket, but I want to make patterns for the straps before I forget, so I can make the apron again sometime.  Maybe it will go quicker next time!

Yay!  Apron!
