coat mock-up #1

I spent a few hours today making shoulder pads for my suit. I wanted really teeny ones, and nobody around here sells 1/4" ones, so I thought I'd better just make them!
I started with crescents of cotton batting,

I stacked them up, then curved them into the right shape, then trimmed off the excess so the edges met.

Then I stitched them together to hold the layers together and to hold the shape.

I really like the way they look! Just a little subtle structure.

Then I started the coat mock-up, and boy, does it suck. I am not happy with it at all!

It's dumpy and ridiculous! The waist is way too big, and the hip area is a bit small. I was worried when I first saw that the front dart was one of those weird slanty hip-to-bust-point ones. I think I'm just going to start over with a new pattern, either one with princess seams or with regular, vertical darts. I guess that means I'm going pattern shopping tomorrow.

Oh, btw, that is the skirt for the suit I'm wearing in the photos. I think it turned out pretty nice.
