I was really hoping to get a photo of my red & white dress up today.  All week I have been foiled at every turn in my attempts to sew; people keep randomly dropping by for visits, I've had a couple appointments, and so on.

Today I spent about 2 hours on it, finally.  (The Girl was unusually self-entertained.)  I took in the waist at 6 of the 13 seams, losing a total of about 3.5".  I don't know how it ended up that big, but whatever.  I still haven't figured out sizing in commercial patterns, I guess.

Then I hemmed, mocked up a sleeve, and bound the neckline with bias.  The sleeve was ridiculously tight (see: sizing, above) so I plan to just use the old standby - the same sleeve I put into everything, with a low cap for movement ease.

The neckline was the problem.  It gaped.  Awfully!  And even though I raised the neckline before cutting the pattern, it was so low that if I moved or breathed, my bra peeked out.

I ripped the binding out (which itself took 1/2 an hour) and I plan to take in the shoulder seam and the front seams, plus make a small dart at the back neckline on each side.

Why oh Why do things like this never turn up on my mockups?  I am a pretty diligent mockup-maker, but I still have these constant problems in the final piece.  The dress is definitely salvageable, I just wish it could be right the first time, once in a while.
