Here’s what I did for F’s costume.

Flora's dres ren fest 2012 (16)

The coif is from the Tudor Tailor diagram.  Two rounded side pieces with a bias panel in the center.  It’s made from the same lawn as the shift, lined in white cotton flannel, with 1/4" twill tape ties.  It could have fit a little more snugly, but I only spent half an hour on it.

The shift is based on the men’s shirt cut, just because it is simpler, with no side gores.  I cut a rectangle, folded at the shoulders, with about 30% of her chest measure added for ease and drape.  The sleeves were tapered to the wrist but still cut full, sewn on to the body slightly gathered but basically at a T shape.  The sleeve cuff was folded and hemmed, with the hem making a casing to thread a tape, creating a ruffle.  The neck was slit down the front, finished with a scrap, and gathered into a band.  The fabric is 100% cotton lawn, Kaufman Savannah.

The skirt is 100% linen in a beautiful teal color.  I simply made one seam at the CB and used elastic and a machine blind hem.  Easy!

The dress is green linen/cotton, Kaufman Essex.  I used her 18th c bodice pattern (which probably was adapted from a t-shirt or something).  I shortened the back waist and scooped the armscye a little larger but otherwise left it as is.  The skirt was leveled at the waist to match the bodice curve, knife pleated to the bodice, and I just gave it a plain topstitched hem which was covered with ribbon.

The lacing is little twill tape loops.  They are not pretty from the inside but from the outside they are almost invisible.  The CF buckles a bit, but I did not want to put boning in a costume for a 3yo.  I stitched the loops in place, then I caught just the edges with a second row of stitching to keep the lining from rolling open.  I also put ribbon at the CF edges, to cover the stitching from the lacing loops.

The dress is lined in a cotton remnant I had.  There are ties and loops to secure the dress to the skirt, but I didn’t end up needing them since the skirt stayed pretty well in place.

The only thing I didn’t like about the costume was that the underskirt didn’t show very much at the front split.  The two colors are so pretty together, so I wish more of the teal was visible.

Other than that, I really liked the way it turned out!   She got tons of comments all day at the festival.  People were amazed when I said I had made it, which always feels odd to me.  I appreciate the compliment, but really?  Where do they think clothes come from?  I don’t mean that to sound snarky, I just think people don’t realize how easy it is to pleat a skirt, and that many people make clothes.

For the chilly festival day, she was wearing lots of underlayers: a long-sleeved white t-shirt, a long-sleeved white thermal tee over that, then her shift; cotton cable-knit tights with Smartwool socks over them; then her skirt, dress, and coif.

Thanks! I will probably keep choosing green for her until she demands to choose for herself.

Isn't it funny how the 'average' person has such a disconnect when it comes to making clothes? Most of us costumer-types have been doing it so long we take it for granted. People don't seem to realize that everything they wear was made by someone human, not a machine. Well, probably with the help of a machine, but not by some completely automated process. It wasn't even that long ago that the majority of clothing was made at home by mothers and wives. It's really just a bizarre and baffling mentality to me.

I really love that color combination. They aren't colors I would have thought to pair, but they look great together! It may be a good thing that her coif has some growing room. You won't have to worry about making a new one next year!
