A new Victorian costume for The Girl

So I made this petticoat for The Girl yesterday.

She is wearing it over the bodiced petticoat/underdress thing from her last year's dress. I am DYING to get her into some corsets, but I am sure that neither she nor her dad would stand for it. And I do mean with just a little cording, and obviously not too tight, so please don't judge me! I mean, kids her age wore them 150 years ago, right?

She also strung all the beads for the necklace; I just did the clasps. I think she is a little bit too aware of how adorable she is, but I can't help that. At least she loves dressing up! I don't know what I would do if she was obstinate about not wearing costumes. It would be tragic!
I did a little machine embroidery to attach the lace. Normally I don't bother with machine embroidery but I figured it's kid clothes so why not?

I am making her a new dress for the weekend event we are planning to attend. The bodice so far:

It has an inset yoke and will have contrast sleeves for a fake blouse/underdress effect. I have the skirt together and some trim started. I am definitely going for layers of trim this time. Self pleats + ribbon + contrast ruffles + lace and so on. This is as much stash-based as possible.
I will wear something old but I was hoping to make some new pants for my HB. We'll see how fast I finish this dress, but pants are looking doubtful. Poor guy.

Date: 2014-11-19 11:23 pm (UTC)Those corded "corsets" are really just fitted bodices. I don't have a problem with them other than I'm actually too lazy to do some for my kiddo. LOL

Date: 2014-11-20 02:45 am (UTC)Elizabeth Stewart Clark has some wonderful girls' patterns. The dresses one is pretty dated past 1865, but the underthings one ("Linens") should be useable for lots of decades. The "stays" are essentially a slightly shaped tube with light cording and shoulder straps, and especially at this age, really just is a place to button on petticoats to keep them up. I'm about to make my niece a bunch of things from this pattern. Oh, and the pattern is useable for ages 2 to 12/14.
